There is an interesting difference between the US and UK versions of Gizmodo. The US version has two articles that are not exactly flattering to the US, while I can find no sign of them on the UK version:

    a) US has allegedly carried out a near act of war by installing malware on Russia’s power stations.

    link

    b) The US Navy is extremely worried about either UFOs or very advanced Russian or Chinese aircraft.

Ed, maybe the US has made a practice run, using Argentina? –

As for UFO’s, I was once taking mates back from a very late night in Nottingham clubs (not drink driving, it was my turn to drive sober) when we were convinced that we had seen some green UFO’s. I pulled over, they staggered out  and we looked at these green lights, flashing across the sky. It definitely was not the aurora borealis, I had seen that in Norway and these were circles of light, criss crossing the sky. “You’re sober,” said one mate “do you see that?” I certainly did, I said.

We watched it for some time and it was still all happening when we left. Next day I learned from the local news, that some idiot Yuppy party-goers had got hold of laser machines at a big country house. The lights had been bouncing off high clouds as they swung the lasers across the sky. IIRC, the miscreants had been reported by aircrew flying into East Midlands airport. I believe they were charged, probably with endangering aircraft.

So no alien invasion, although when I watch the TV news and the antics of our politicians, I begin to think the aliens got here some time ago. And they are not a particularly advanced bunch either.

I see that age varification to view porn has derailed.

They reckon the reason for population decrease in the developed world is in part due to porn.

I say there is no admisable defence in being shy. Go out and get a girlfriend. 🙂

Education is the reason for lower rates. The corrilation is undeniable.

Steve, I agree. It has been common knowledge that better education leads to lower birth rates and better healthier survival rates. It has been the case everywhere.

Population is growing in either less-developed countries, or developing countries with huge populations, therefore unable or unwilling to educate all of their people.  This will produce an exponentially – growing number of ‘have-nots’ who will have more and more reasons to take from the ‘haves’.

The pill, and fertility in Western males has declined by around 50%. So far no cause has been identified for the latter but I reckon farm spraying of insecticides and anti-fungals plays a big role.

A mate and I were discussing this the other day. He blames the tendency of today’s young women towards more masculine work and activities, and the increased tendency of young men towards more ‘femininity’. That includes, he says, the rising number of women in what was men’s work. This developed into an argument between us, as I pointed out that women had been taking male work since the munitions factories, bus and tram driving, farm labouring and other work in WWI. After a brief period of peace, a large part of the male population left to fight WWII and the women took back ‘male’ jobs again. I pointed to my own background: growing up in a pit village, women worked in clothing factories, most of the men at the pit, some in engineering, some joined HMF. In the same village today, sans pit, the local women work at any job they can find, and so do the men. I told him he was a dinosaur and he left in a huff. I can carry a debate to the point at which I may admit I am wrong, but not even a long-standing mate can make me admit to being wrong when I am convinced I am not. Years of that attitude probably explains the shape of my nose…

But it is a fact that Western men do not have the position as Master of the House that they once had. Ed is right I believe with ” …farm spraying of insecticides and anti-fungals plays a big role.” and I suggest that pollution and diet also play a part. Porn: I don’t know whether that has a negative or positive effect, if you understand my meaning. I certainly believe that paedophilia was never as rife as it has become. Whether male and female homosexuality has increased or was always at the extent it is now, is something that cannot be ascertained now, I think.

I mean no criticism of any one group by that last, I have a couple of gay friends, but all of the above factors must play a part. I have been present at the birth of my two biological children and it is an experience that made me thankful to be born male, but a woman who has not given birth, for whatever good reason, means at least one less child and future adult.

Looks like it is real Chinese tech which is years ahead of US aerospace technology and the US is scrambling to play catchup. What must really worry the US is that China and Russia have a history of sharing tech advances.

Bob, since history is always written by those who feel they won, whatever that means it is hard to follow the role of women in past generations. However, at one point they did work alongside men in a very public way, albeit in a private location, mining. A parliamentary commission was looking into the dire working conditions of miners and visited a mine or mines. The work was hot hard and dangerous so the workers took to wearing basically nothing for both the men and the women. This totally stunned the visiting rubberneckers who were scandalised by this scene of naked workers and a vote to restrict the employment of women resulted. Given the conditions, the life shortening effects of the work, etc. I doubt that the workers minds strayed into thoughts of debauchery, but they had to be protected and women had to be constrained. In fact of course women had and have continued to work in any role they could as the wartime efforts attested. Sadly those battles are still being fought.

As for sperm issues, there are many ‘reasons’ put forward, weight, clothing, excessive sitting, various forms of pollution, foods, cooking styles, pharmaceutical products, perhaps even a small bit of evolution and so on. Perhaps there is no clear one fits all reason, sperm do not like elevated temperatures and body temperature is an elevated temperature for them, they do not like pollution either, so round and round the issue goes. Does anyone have any good epidemiological data comparing ‘performances in different areas, activities, pollution levels, etc. as the basis of a good study?

Excessive heat can be discounted as a cause of infertility/low sperm count Richard. Or there would not be 1.25 billion people on the Indian subcontinent. ?? Australia would be empty! (Hang on, there is a larger ratio of women to men there. Have I stumbled upon something?) ??

Seriously: we humans are animals. Mostly with more evolved intelligence than other animals, but animals even so. I believe that being the dominant species on the planet and being more sapient than others, does not exclude us from the issues that any animal species face. A species that breeds to the point of overpopulation, taking up more food, water and living space, must eventually fail. I fear that we are on that path unless the whole human world does something about it. A saying of my dad’s – ‘If you are tired enough, you must sleep, however your bed is made.’

Ed, I am reminded of two Great Britons: Sir Barnes Wallis who invented so much including the Variable Geometry wing (the Swing Wing) and Sir Arthur C. Clarke, who was not just a great SF and Science writer. He conceptualised and forecasted Satellite technology. There are many more such who came from these islands, but those are just two who saw their ideas taken up elsewhere.

I have not found the proof of this today, but many years ago I read somewhere that Sir Barnes W theorised a craft that would take off from a large lake or other body of water, by gas turbine engines, and fly around the curve of the Earth, gathering speed and height, until at the edge of space, some other form of propulsion, perhaps rockets, would take it into orbit. This would reduce the cost of huge rocket boosters firing a relatively small payload into orbit. It seemed a realistic proposal at the time: perhaps the Chinese read the original paper and carried the idea forward.
