Out of curiosity @johnbarry what software do you use to convert the VHS or Grab it from your capture device. Mine his pants. If the video is not perfect it just stop recording and old recorded tv from 15 – 20 years ago is not going to be perfect. 🙁 I can find an alternative that’s any good and that includes vlc.

I use this to capture from the VCR (analogue) to the USB device the capture software (Arcsoft Showbiz) comes with it. You install Showbiz open it up and play your Video select Capture, once the video is finished you select (in Showbiz) Produce many options to go for DVD mpeg etc. I use mpeg. Once it produced I use Nero 10 to create a DVD then burn. At times I use DVD flick to create DVD
You need the software that comes with the device as does Video to PC.
I used use ATI AIW since Windows 10 I had to go USB, even with ATI you could get your pants torn off.
The more processor and ram the better the quality.
IE I used to use 8mb ATI AIWand the quality was pants on a single core CPU with Windows ME 1GG ram. Eventually I upgraded to a 256mb with XP and a ATI AIW and it was great.
With USB it doesn’t seem to be reliant on the capture device as more your rig specs.
Hence I use the video to PC on duel cores 4gb ram now I use quad core and 8gb ram with Windows 10 and never looked back.
The better the CPU & Ram the better the result. In the older days with ATI the sound track was always slightly out of sinc.
You may get slight tracking problem at the bottom of the picture, but that’s the VCR.
I haven’t captured lately so the above is best to my memory, It also depends on the quality of your video tape and VCR.
I think I put one in the other thread but here it is
Cheers
John00January 23, 2018 at 11:53 am #16085Thank you John, you reminded me to check out my copy of ShowBiz% which looks rather different now with Windows 10 than it did as the old ShowbizDVD2. It still appears to do the same things.
I used to use my Camcorder as the A>D converter reading the digital stream in via the IEE1394 port I have kept available but not used in a while.
I suspect that the Showbiz package is now something of an orphan as Arcsoft did not list when I last looked, I would be annoyed if it was lost.
00January 23, 2018 at 1:11 pm #16086Same software as I have been using but saying that it started working after I posted last night so I’ll see how it goes.

00January 24, 2018 at 3:13 am #16110It’s doing ok but to be honest it’s poor quality and giving me a black line down one side. There is not many options to adjust anything it so I think I had better look for some better capturing software that can do a bit more. Any recommendations? Something still updated would be good.

00January 24, 2018 at 6:55 am #16118“black line down one side”
Thats a tracking line problem, not a software one.
The primary cause varies but could well be dust on your vcr heads. Try a careful blast from an air-can.
Another possibility is that the tape has stretched try rewwinding to retension and start again.
If all else fails there should be a slider/buttons on your vcr that adjust tracking.
00January 24, 2018 at 7:04 am #16119Wow, I forgot about the tracking nob. if that fails you could try finding a head cleaning tape. I think all homes had one in the 80s.
£4 on amazon. ‘Vcr head cleaner ‘

00January 24, 2018 at 7:09 am #16121They used to discourage regular use of ‘cleaning tapes’ as they caused head wear, but in an umpteen years old vcr — who cares!
00January 24, 2018 at 8:13 am #16123I have done a tape clean but I do not have an original remote for it and there Is no tracking button. 🤔

00January 24, 2018 at 8:30 am #16126Sometimes tracking was in a hidden position, perhaps under a drop down flap somewhere. It might take several forms including a knurled knob if a barely detectable position.
00January 24, 2018 at 8:41 am #16127I did mention tracking on the other page, but normally on the bottom. The later VCRs came with Auto Tracking so you won’t find it on the remote.
I doubt you will ever get rid of the tracking problem, it does show on all my finished convertions.
The one on the link in my other post doesn’t show tracking, but if you double click (enlarge) you can see tracking problem at the bottom.
Tracking problems are also created when you first record to video so if it’s on it’s always on.

John00January 24, 2018 at 9:00 am #16132Thinking of Video recorders I always found the Video 2000 was the best, sadly it lost the war as did Betamax.

John00January 24, 2018 at 10:30 am #16134I bet the V2000 set up would have been extremely expensive to produce compared to the VHS we got.
The best rarely wins. all you have to be is ‘good enough’ at a superior price level (value), to win.

This is one of the problems of not having an edit option. The misinformation is there to be read years down the line.
Seems Windows Movie Maker links are fake.

00January 24, 2018 at 3:51 pm #16146During my first year out of Army service (’76 to ’77) I worked at a garage whose foreman was ex-RAF. He came in one day in ’81, bragging about 2 things he had bought cheap, “in a Nottingham pub”. One was a Betamax VCR, the other was an 8-track, in-car tape player. I left that garage for a foreman job at a larger business, didn’t see him for a few years, asked him about his 2 purchases.
His reply contained obscenities, the gist of which was that he had junked them both.

Is it both links? If so, I’ll remove them over the weekend 👍

I thought regular users could only edit posts for a short time?
