If you need Windows 7 for any cases where Windows 10 does not work, (there are a few) then today is your last chance to update.

Spent last night switching SWMBO’s Laptop to 10, some of today sorting it out. That’s 3 I’ve done now: my desktop, son’s desktop and Gert’s Lenovo B50-80, 128GB SSD, which naturally is giving me grief. 🙄😏🤐 I am now trying to remove Windows.old and the Lenovo Recovery partition(s) and it will not let me. Gone to Properties – Permissions, tried to get access there. Downloaded Aomi and had a look. I found 4 Partitions:

    *:SYSTEM-DRV   Capacity: 200.00 MB     Free Space:165.4MB

    C:\Windows7-OS  Capacity:106.21GB        Free Space:48.76GB

    *:   Capacity: 599.00MB                                 Free Space: 87.94MB

    *:PBR_DRV            Capacity:12.25GB          Free Space:1.32GB

I cannot work out which are Recovery partitions. I suspect that the first one listed above is MBR? Second, although it says Windows 7, I think must be the Win 10 C Drive. Could the 3rd and 4th be Recovery and Windows.old?

I have tried to remove the Lenovo carp from the laptop, but it will not allow that. I want to remove the Recovery partition with Easeus, which will delete partitions, and also junk the Lenovo stuff. Any ideas? Won’t be back until tomorrow, just about to watch Spurs get thrashed by Middlesborough.

    Thanks for any input.

Bob have you tried through computer management in administrative tools then disk management that normally shows the partitions in use and lets you delete the others. I once had to do it through cmd line after I had established the ones that weren’t needed as disk management wouldn’t do it but the cmd line way worked.

The system partition is indeed where your system boots from, it contains the Windows boot manager and Boot Configuration Data (BCD) file amongst other things. On a UEFI system it should be called EFI and be formatted FAT32. Normally only 100MB but 200 is ok.

The Windows 7 is where Windows 10 lives and it would have been called Windows 10 if you had done a clean install. This is also where you will find Wimdows.old, you can normally remove that by running disc clean up once then ticking clean system files and running it again.

PBR_DRV is the lenovo backup partition and it may well be invalid now you have done the W10 upgrade.

You do not appear to have a Windows backup partition yet as it would be labled PBE for pre boot environment or RE for recovery environment. If you need help creating one I would have to look it up AGAIN for the latest version of Windows 😁

Oh yes, it SHOULD be safe to use Easeus to remove the Lenovo backup partition and then you can use the space for a Windows recovery partition or you can expand the Windows 7 partition to fill the free space.

Speaking as someone who gathered a lot of scars from fiddling with partitions: make certain that you have a good backup copy of all the files you need to keep.

Good in this context means tested. Although I hate Acronis cloud and the way it hogs i/o, the one very useful aspect of the program is that you can test the backup vm container and try restoring a couple of file backups to a temporary location. I tend to select a couple of images or pdfs from a couple of directories and see if they are good before actually deleting any partitions. I never bother with testing the Windows files.

Basically Bob, leave it alone – you’re not short of space.

Or you could do that of course 😂

Thanks for all the advice guys.

I understand what you say about leaving it alone Dave but SWMBO has a Plan (OMG) which will require more GB, and the Lenovo Backup has a total of almost 14 GB spare. So I will take Ed‘s advice about a backup. actually wanted to install another SSD in the DVD drawer, she has never used it and I have a USB DVD RW if needed. No, said milady.

Thanks Mark, I can use Easeus to remove the partition, not going into cmd if I can help it, but that’s good advice too.

Graham, thanks for the useful info, I understand things better now.

If you backup all the personal files and you do not have specialist software that you need to keep, then the best bet is a clean install and let windows take the pain. You can then restore your own files afterwards.

Thanks Ed. I am going to do just that as soon as I can. I no longer have any specialist software, think those days are gone. I have to say that any apprehension I had about 10 is also gone. I like it. Now my task is to convince SWMBO…. 🙄😉
