  • I’ve today discovered that Birmingham will be getting its own Clean Air Zone congestion charge, anything inside the ring-road needs to comply with either Euro 6 diesel, Euro 4 petrol or anything with “Ultra-low emissions that have a significant range on zero emissions” will be exempt from the charge, coming in July 2020. Though I’m sure over the…[Read more]

@EdP, all is running over Ethernet, not WiFi. I have the 4gb version of the pi 4, I think I’ve given it 256Mb for the gpu. Why would decreasing swappyness help? Or is it too reduce premature swapping out?

@dave, that’s correct, stream to the office. The pi is able to do it just about at 1080, though I feel the mouse lagging but playing portal…[Read more]

The Ryzen does need to stay in the living room, so that VR gaming has the space to be played in, so it is the “office” box that needs to be the low powered remote in one.

The system is all ethernetted up, not using WiFi. I’ve been attempting to use Moonlight (Nvidia remote play system) and SteamLink for gaming. It works well for 1080p, but 4k it…[Read more]

  • It is the Pi 4 4Gb. While the Pi can do 4k on one screen (I’ve never tried 2), it’s really like treacle. It’s definitely useful for static displays/advertising boards, but for using as a day to day desktop, it just doesn’t have the power. Plus for me, I can’t use HDMI in at 4k 60.

  • Hi all,

Hoping I can get some advice on my next purchase. In my living room I have my Ryzen machine. This is great for playing games on the TV and playing VR with the Oculus. But coming to do serious work or gaming where I need a mouse and keyboard is all a bit rubbish on a sofa.

What I’d like to be able to do is remote into the machine…[Read more]

  • I’ve been searching around trying to find a cable that will connect my Nvidia shield (HDMI output), to my 4k monitor (Acer CB280HK).

The annoyance with this monitor is that the HDMI is only 1.4, which means 4k @ 30Hz. What it does have is Display Port and Mini Displayport, which can run 4k @ 60Hz, but I can’t find a cable that will take HDMI to…[Read more]

  • What sort of power usage do these boxes use? I’ve always thought these Synology boxes are pretty expensive for what they are, considering they don’t come with the drives. My Pi 3 has been running connected to the router for power, but naturally it’s limited in what it can do. File serving, Pihole and Plex (within limits, no 4k for…[Read more]

I do remember you mentioning those, thanks, that’s a no brainer!

  • I have finally upgraded my PC to the big leagues. Having for quite a number of years not really been using the most legal versions of Windows 10 (I should have stopped using them once I stopped being a student), with this new PC I figure I ought to do the right thing.

I’ve already downloaded a copy of the Windows 10 ISO, but I need a licence…[Read more]

  • @Tippon, definitely something I will employ for my longer training rides. 2×25 mile runs is going to be easier to manage timewise than 1 5o miler.

I went to my local bike shop to get some advice about my current bike. He ended up showing me a lot of things, plus introduced me to the new bikes that were there. I’m now extremely tempted to use…[Read more]

  • Can’t seem to edit my previous post, or I’m being dumb and not spotting the button.

I was just looking at the Schwalbe website, and I don’t seem to find 42-622, 700x42C or anything like that. Has it been changed? Or is it toowide for Schwalbe to stock? I guess the other question would be, what tyres would my wheels support?

  • Thank you all for the information. That does put me in less worry about my bike, I’ll take a look at getting some better tyres, as while they don’t look too bad, they have been on the bike for 5 years. I’ll look at some more road type ones. I think the worst road I will travel on is cobblestoned, so I’ll just have to take it easy over that…[Read more]

  • So I’ve gone and done a stupid thing and signed up for a 100 mile bike ride in May, which I am clearly not ready for.

I know there are one or two cycle enthusiasts here and was wondering if I might get some advice.

My current bike is a 2014 Ridgeback Velocity Hybrid, which I’m led to believe is on the heavier side, but should be good enough. But…[Read more]

  • Going to have read this thread. I’ve just had the car MOT’d and it had to have a few things fixed. Only £217 though this time round. But I think after 17 years, she’s going to start having more and more things at issue.

The Clutch is slipping (driven round it for 2 years though), the MOT notes corroding brake lines and uneven brake discs. So…[Read more]

Which means everything you type goes to their servers, not something I want.

  • Just had a look at Birmingham airport, I never knew that the ground vehicles could also be tracked on flightradar!

If they were quick little ads I could deal with them .But the other day I was in the shower listening to an hour long album . I thought the music was different at one point, having not listened to the album before I thought maybe it was a differntd track, but when I got out, it was actually an advert that had another 3 minutes to run if I hadn’t…[Read more]

  • I think all of the Ryzens currently out have had a price cut. For about £20 more than the 2400G I can get a 1600. It’s now a pretty tough decision. I could get a base system going with the low end £80 2200G, as upgrading later will be easy enough.

The one problem I do have with my PiHole is that the admin page doesn’t update with statistics. An annoyance, rather than a problem. Youtube ads weren’t being autoblocked, but I found a list of domains to add manually which seems to have sorted that out 🙂

  • Yup, have decided I’m going to make a new server based on them. Can’t decide between the 2400G or a cheap 1600 though.
