If you have an iPhone or iPad get the flier to send a message to you with the Airline and flight number – e.g. British Airways BA1234.  Open the message and touch the details and the flight tracker will automatically open.

  • Have you tried Recuva ? I’ve always found it pretty reliable. Note that if it does find lost files they should be saved to a different drive to prevent overwriting the files you’re trying to recover.

Did nephew reload the OS or just transfer the HDD to the new mobo?

Is he sure the new mobo is identical and not a different version of the same model?

I’ve checked a 4 year old Dell laptop which I haven’t used for a while and on that it’s F12. (Boot options)

IIRC most Dell PCs have built in diagnostics accessed by pressing F8 (I think, or maybe F11 or F12) during bootup. Worth running if you haven’t done so already.

Have you tried plugging the USB transmitter into a different socket?

  • I have recently discovered that Windows 10, 8.1 and 7 and Office 2010 can now be downloaded from https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/
For 8.1 and 7 you may need a product key and for 10 the April Version 1803 isn’t available if you are already using 1809. As I needed 1803 for a computer which wouldn’t run 1809, I downloaded it on my…[Read more]

Sorted! Changing the Gamma setting on the monitor from 2.2 to 2.4 removed the problem. Bit of a mystery!

Thank you both for your suggestions.

I recently treated myself to a new Philips monitor which has HDMI and VGA inputs. One of my preferred photo editors is Photoscape 3.7 as it is quite easy to use and has a good clone tool. However when in edit mode the screen starts to flicker after a minute or two which gradually gets worse and makes the thing unusable. If I switch to ‘Viewer’…[Read more]

1703 duly updated to 1803 and all seems OK. Many thanks to you all for your help/suggestions.

Unfortunately these laptops (actually described as mobile workstations) date from the XP days and HP don’t support them past Vista. Stupid really as they are well built sturdy machines and should last many years. My colleague has 3 of them (!); I have already installed an SSD in one which has a 64bit processor and 1809 installed OK. The one I’m…[Read more]

As it happened I found a copy of the 1703 iso which has installed OK. Question now is – if it’s a 1809 driver problem how do I stop it updating? !!

I don’t think so Tippon. I downloaded it again today just in case but still no good.

  • A colleague’s laptop (HP Compaq nw9440) fouled up during a recent W10 update and thereafter failed to boot up. I tried to reload the OS using downloaded 1809 both with iso/cd and usb stick but in both cases it got as far as the windows logo but no further. I eventually got into the existing OS and added another user which worked OK so assumed t…[Read more]

  • Jukebox replied to the topic HDD??????????? in the forum PC Talk 8 months, 1 week ago

You should be able to turn indexing off on that drive and see if it makes any difference. In file explorer, right click on the HDD drive, select Properties and in the General tab untick ‘Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties’.

Have had 4 phone calls from ‘TalkTalk’ (not) today telling me (in an American accent) that my internet service will be disconnected today and I should press 1 to get further details. Although I am able to block certain callers, each of these calls came from a different number so blocking is not an option. Time something was done to stop these pests.

Now only £19.79 for a 120GB Integral at MyMemory  (less 69P if you use TopCashback!)

Probably a waste of time telling them anything. As part of my broadband deal I was given an ‘essential sim’ free of charge which is designed for light users. In April I was assured on ‘on-line chat’ that as long as I remained a broadband/telephone customer the sim would remain free. Since September they are now charging £3 per month. (Still…[Read more]

A bit off topic but it’s worth remembering that the same applies to the air conditioning in a motor vehicle which should be run for a few minutes at intervals throughout the winter.

  • I’m planning to install an SSD to replace the existing spinner (W10) and would be grateful for advice on the best software to achieve this. A search brought up Easeus ToDo but I’m sure there must be others. Apologies if this has been covered before – I did a quick search but couldn’t find anything! Cheers, John
