• Going back to Monkey Shoulder’s problem, the same thing happened here. I got round it using ‘Map Network Drive’ (in file explorer menu). Only disadvantage seems to be that if you boot up with the remote PC not live you get an error message ‘unable to connect all network drives’

My son is buying a new house (under construction) but it is very basic unless he pays a fortune for extras. There are only 2 TV points (lounge and kitchen) but the builder wants £65 per outlet for any more! Installation of wired outlets after completion is not going to be practical due to the design of the build and I am wondering if any forumite…[Read more]

  • Now updated both PCs to 1803. Update went smoothly on both desktop & laptop except that the brightness now can’t be adjusted on the laptop and runs at full wack. Seems like a common problem when Google consulted. None of the suggestions there have worked so I guess I’ll just have to wear my sunglasses when using the laptop 😎. No point…[Read more]

  • I usually use Thunderbird for my emails but the info on some messages appears with odd symbols between the letters :

The problem only seems to occur with spam, but not all spam. I’ve tried changing default fonts and encryption but haven’t yet solved the problem. The messages appear OK using webmail. Any ideas?

Following the helpful info from you guys for which I thank you, I bought one of these for my 2011 Samsung laptop. Boot up time now 24 seconds and its much snappier in use. One other benefit which I don’t think has been mentioned is the increased time between battery charges – I haven’t actually done an accurate check but at a rough guess a charge…[Read more]

As it only fails after a video/youtube it might be worth reinstalling the video driver. (In Device Manager select the display adapter, right click and select ‘uninstall device’). Then reboot. If that doesn’t work go through the same procedure and select ‘update driver’.

Probably a daft question! Would I need some sort of mounting kit to fit these in a laptop?

  • This is probably not relevant but maybe worth a mention. A couple of years ago my VW suddenly decided not to start and the AA bloke (who had fortunately previously worked for VW) fiddled around for a couple of minutes and then asked if I had a spare key. Spare key worked fine! Apparently there is a transponder (whatever that is) built into the key…[Read more]

  • Woke up to about 2 1/2 inches of the white stuff on the ground this morning (Solihull) and it doesn’t show any signs of going away yet.

Hi John.  I’ve just tried this and it works OK! You control the locked file with the batch file – when you lock it the Locker actually becomes hidden (until you unlock it again!)

Yes – felt it here (Solihull). Very slight though.

It’s worth remembering that genuine Paypal emails will always address you by name eg Dear Jo Bloggs. Scams usually start with Dear Paypal User, Dear Customer, etc.

  • I’ve always thought Windows to be a pretty good system. However W10 is starting to get right up my nose! I have 2 PCs, a desktop and a laptop, and every time W10 does a major update there is an issue on one or other of them (rarely the same issue on both!). I’ve had printers uninstalled, Ccleaner uninstalled and start-up shortcuts deleted to nam…[Read more]

I’m looking for a basic PC which will only be used to wirelessly access an on-line appointments system – nothing else. Have any of you used this or similar?

As it will be on 24/7 I’m wondering about overheating.

Cost is about £75 from China (with an Americal Plug) or £95 for the same thing from a UK supplier (with a…[Read more]

Have had this problem several times. Try washing the CD in lukewarm water with a drop of washing up liquid added. Rinse well and make sure it’s dry before trying again!

  • I had 2 accounts with AOL which were deleted without warning ‘due to inactivity of more than 90 days’. If they had given me advance warning (on my main account) I could have retrieved the old emails but now they are lost and gone forever. Very annoying and a black mark for AOL!

  • My son has just bought an Apple iMac and wants to run Coral Draw on it. A quick browse suggests using either a Virtual Machine or something like Winebottle, neither of which I have any experience of. Any advice would be very welcome. Looking at VMs there is a free one called VirtualBox and several others which cost, but free would be preferable!

  • Maybe it’s just a typo but aren’t LAN addresses normally 192.168.x.xxx not 192.168.1xx.x?

  • Hi Craig. My daughter had a similar problem a couple of years ago. PC couldn’t access the disk at all. However I was able to recover all her files using Hirens Boot CD (v15.2), saved to a CD (there are USB versions as well). http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download. After booting the PC from the disk, choose Mini XP (for some reason you have to do it…[Read more]
