Almost there. Need to physically put the new HDDs in the case and get SWIMBO’s approval for new desktop and lock screen.  Then a few minor fiddles of no real consequence.  Not bad for a week’s work 🙄 but it is several years since I did anything like this and the little grey cells are glowing much dimmer these days.

Eventually tracked down the c…[Read more]

Thanks Ed.  I will remember that if there is a next time.

However this time despite all the modern electronic wizardry the good olf fashioned way one out and so did SWIMBO.  Whilst I was searching for some electronic IT angel to guide me, she had her head in a box of dusty crumpled manuscripts.  From which she emerged triumphant.

    One up to th…[Read more]

A very sincere thanks to you all for your patience.

First the good news.  Having executed something akin to a clean instal courtesy of W10 things are now moving at a reasonable speed, but I now have to reinstal so much software. More good news – it has rather forced things with regards to the oodles of software that had accumulated. Bad news I…[Read more]

    Hi Boris

Thanks for the link, but I have been there and it says “out of stock”  and “no sellers found”.  I guess it will have to be 2X4GB in the final attempt, but I am sure I read somehere that Windows does not like excess memory, so that means 64 bit.

But before that, I will try a fresh instal.  Thanks to Graham, but I am on Home now so to go…[Read more]

To get to a “useable” takes at least 65 seconds, but much longer before the spinners stop.

To get to a browser is variable but takes from a couple of minutes to never!

    Hi Ed

what can I do to strangle Cortana

    Many thanks for the replies

The Mobo is a gigabyte Z77DS3H which might not be state of the art but is younger than the other PCs running W10 acceptably.

All PCs are 32 Bit and all have 4GB memory, although as I said this is the only one with one stick.

All PCs have SSDs for the OS with ample room on them.

The problem one also suffers from…[Read more]

  • Last week upgraded wife’s pc to w10 (it went like a train under W7 but needs must)

Now it runs like a geriatric snail, frequently stopping for a rest, or even stopping completely.  I have stripped everything and it goes only a little better, but I noticed it only has one stick of RAM, albeit 4GB.  All my other machines have 2 sticks of 2GB.  co…[Read more]

  • Thanks again Dave.

From what I can see, this comes fitted with a 2TB drive so not bad value

  • Thanks Dave

I looked up TonidoPlug but it seems a bit more than I can handle these days.  If it requires mores than simply plugging something in and following a curser then it does far more than I need.  The normal NAS type kit might be good and a few years back I might have gone down that route, but now I am afraid it is a step too far.  My cu…[Read more]

A few yeears bac I got a tp link adapter (thanks to Dave IIRC) to hook 2 usb external drives to my network.  I have used it as  extra st6orage and as a backup device.  It is not a de-luxe solution but it works and I fancy setting up another.  The TP link adapter is still available but is only USB2.

Anyone know of a more up to date device – say…[Read more]

    Thanks for the input.

I am a luddite who strongly believes in the old maxim “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” which is why I still use Office 97.  I don’t understand UEFI although I have tried several times to get to grips with it.  Maybe one day I will be forced to convert but at the moment I am totally BIOS orientated. By the time I am forced t…[Read more]

Hi.  Just about getting used to W10.  So much so that I have upgraded another machine.

Having read another article that suggested that upgrading W7 in situ would automatically install and activate W10 for free I gave it a go.  Simples.  Just make sure you have the right ISO – eg you cannot go from Home to Pro.

Also apparently it is not gua…[Read more]

I’m with  the rest of them.  Have a good one.  Let us know what the river cruise is like.  SWMBO keeps wanting to go on one.

Pehaps I did not express mysf properly.

Re Excel Col Width.  Right click on the top of any column then select Column Width.  Up pops a box with a number.  This refers to the column width.  On an unmodified spreadsheet this states 8.43 which I presume is the default width. It is perfectly wide enough for 8 characters plus a decimal point and I hav…[Read more]

Just to show I am up to date I am still using Office 1997.😀  It does most of what I need so why change?

Well, it  does not read docx files and does not run under Linux. So I loaded Libre Office to download docx then save them as doc. files for Office 1997. It is a bit of a pain but I only produce/read docx files about 5 times a year.

    I could  us…[Read more]

    Thanks Folk.

IIRC it was Flight Radar I used a couple of years back, but then it really was “live” and you could track the planes into LHR (or anywhere else for that matter) but now it is “dead” – no movement at all. To simulate movement you have to keep restarting the flight – unless I am missing something.
